Is it safe to buy a secondhand pushchair?
Short answer: yes — pushchairs are one of the best things to buy used, if you check the right six things. Here's the checklist, plus the two items you should always buy new.
Why secondhand is the smart default
UK parents own an average of four pushchairs per child, and half go barely used (Buggy Revival). Premium prams are built for a decade but used for two or three years, which is why a £1,000+ pram routinely sells for a third to a half of its new price within 18 months. The savings are real; the risks are manageable with a ten-minute inspection.
The six-point inspection
1 · Frame & joints
Run your hands along the chassis. Cracks, dents or rust at the joints mean the frame has been stressed — walk away. Faded fabric is cosmetic; a bent frame isn't.
2 · Both folding locks
Every pushchair sold in the UK must have a primary and a secondary lock so it can't fold with a child in it. Fold and unfold it yourself and make sure both engage crisply.
3 · Brakes, both directions
Apply the brake, then push forwards and pull backwards. It should hold both ways — on a slope if you can find one.
4 · Wheels & tracking
Spin each wheel (listen for grinding), check for wobble, and push one-handed: it should run straight. Pneumatic tyres: check for perishing and ask when the inner tubes were last changed.
5 · Harness, buckle, bumper bar
Tug hard on the harness anchor points, click the buckle a few times, and check bumper-bar foam for bite marks — loose foam is a choking hazard.
6 · The label & the recall register
Find the BS EN 1888 label on the frame or seat fabric — it's the pushchair safety standard. Then search the model on the official GOV.UK product recalls register; live pram recalls do happen.
Always buy new: the two exceptions
Car seats. A car seat that's been in a crash can be invisibly compromised. The Lullaby Trust advises against secondhand car seats even when the history is "known". If the travel-system bundle you're eyeing includes one, price it as if the seat weren't there — the pushchair is where the value is.
Carrycot / crib mattresses. Buy a new, firm, flat, waterproof mattress for each baby — secondhand mattresses are linked to an increased risk of sudden infant death (Lullaby Trust guidance).
